The Friar’s Christmas
The wicked house upon the hill
With groomed gardens and fancy frill
No one visits its lush attire
For within resides, a gloomy friar
Snowflake from heaven does fall and lands
Where the Saviour’s call commands
For they too are afraid of him
And bid to blow, a chilling wind
While hoping to distract their fall
And land not on, the friar’s hall
In the cavernous luxury within
The friar’s eyes are growing dim
A fire burns a fractured din
Surrounded by the cold within
No joyous sound emits at all
From the silent midst of the friar’s wall
Many years past him fly
Consumed of things, that money buy
Guarding dreams of wealthy gain
No one shares his empty pain
Tired eyes and hair of grey
Glanced up from the fire that day
Outside a joyous troupe
Danced and sang a rowdy hoop
Incensed by the fractured peace
He raised his ire to increase
Window open in defiance to
He bid the troupe a swift adieu
Noticing the voice of call
The troupe did leave the friar’s hall
All but one of the singing group
Left the grounds at the friar’s croup
A voice of tiny stature held
In defiance to, the angry delve
Nervously she drew a breath
Giving voice to her best
She sang of peace and her Saviour confessing
Then wished the friar, a Christmas blessing
In the snow, the girl collapsed
Into a coma she elapsed
By her side, the friar bent
The lifeless form of the angel spent
She had given of her all
So the Saviour, he would call
Now today the friar’s home
Abounds with blessings of its own
Children share the friar’s chair
While families visit his Christmas fare
It is easy to consume
And forget the friar’s gloom
Many are alone today
And long to hear the Saviour’s way
In a world consumed with fear
The hope of Christmas they wait to hear
Will you stand alone and sing?
Of the birth of Jesus – our King.
