G’day
One of the many dilemmas facing authors, is how to engage your reader.
Too many words are just as bad as too little.
Wrong choice of words and not enough of the right words and your reader will snore their way through your book.
Speaking of using wrong words and too many, I can recall a story of Michael Finnegan.
Now Finnegan worked on the railways. His job was to keep the trains running to schedule and then write a weekly report to management, outlining important events that management needed to know about.
His reports were long, meandering documents of trivial occurrences, that consumed large amounts of time to decipher.
His superior became incensed at Finnegan’s detail to trivial matters and told him to keep his reports brief and to the point.
Not long after, there was a huge derailment in Finnegan’s jurisdiction.
A day passed, the derailment was cleared and trains began to run again.
Finnegan’s report read, ‘Off again…On again…Finnegan.’
Writing has become a large part of my life that brings me great enjoyment.
A quote sits on my writing desk, always reminding me of the great responsibility I have to my readers.
